The Association serves as a pro-active forum for the advancement of persons with physical disabilities so as to enable them to attain their maximum level of independence and integration into the community, and is active in the prevention of physical disablement.

Fundraising

  Western Cape APD is a registered non-profit organisation with the Directorate for Non-Profit Organisations, is exempt from income tax and is able to provide certification for the purposes of donations tax and receives a nominal subsidy from the Department of Social Development. This subsidy, while it certainly aids the Association in the achievement of its objectives, is by no means sufficient to cover all the services rendered. For this reason, we employ a full-time fundraiser to co-ordinate the various fundraising activities, some of which are national projects.

The Association also makes use of funding proposals to grant organisations, amongst them the National Lotteries Board, and the generosity of the public and private sectors in securing the much-needed funding in order to make a difference to the lives of persons with disabilities. We are indeed grateful for the bequests, grants, donations (both monetary and in kind) which we receive, as we could not function optimally without them.

Training of Branch fundraisers receives our continuous attention.

3. Game Stores & Vodacom give wheelchairs to schoolchildren!

Game Stores and Vodacom again provided sponsorship of wheelchairs to school-going children, in order to allow them to continue attending school. This year a total of 63 wheelchairs were given to 10 ELSEN schools in the Western Cape, mainly in the Peninsula area.

Each child had been individually assessed and measured, which meant that each wheelchair provided was custom made for that specific child. In this way, secondary health complications like pressure sores and respiratory problems will be eliminated.

As an association which promotes independence of persons with disabilities, we congratulate Game Stores and Vodacom for their commitment to the provision of correct seating for children with disabilities.

Seen at the presentation of the wheelchairs was (back, from left to right) Valda Botha (Western Cape APD), Frank Haigh and Charlie Stathakis (Game), Steve Kerrigan (Vodacom) and (front, left to right) Tamaara Anderson (Vista Nova School), Tadiwanashe Kucherera (Filia School), Dennis Trotskie (Paarl School).

6. Wheels 4 Wheels Campaign 2009

The fourth Wheels 4 Wheels Campaign, the brainchild and CSI project of Chrysler Jeep Dodge Century City (CJD), has just been completed, which has proved to be a flagship project for CSI. The Campaign sponsors one wheelchair for every Jeep sold during September. The project is spearheading collaboration between the corporate sector, an NGO and the Department of Health. We are proud to announce that they were the winners of the prestigous Mercedes Benz (Daimler Chrysler) Dealer of the Year award in 2008 for best Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

In conjunction with Shonaquip, provider of disability training and equipment, WCAPD identified 14 people in the Vredendal and Clanwilliam area who required suitable seating, assessed and fitted them with suitable devices. A delivery rally was then held over the weekend of 17 and 18 September, where members of the Jeep Club and staff of the organsiations involved were given the opportunity of delivering the wheelchair personally to a beneficiary, as well as participating in a 4X4 adventure./P>

A first this year was the extension of the Campaign into 2 additional spheres : Driver Training of 10 persons with disabilities in an adapted vehicle, up to and including their Driver`s Licence test, as well participating in the Arrive Alive Buckle Up Campaign which educates the public on the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt in the event of an accident.

The project supports the World Health Organisation`s (WHO) guidelines on the provision of correct assessment and seating for wheelchair users, so as to prevent secondary health complications like respiratory problems, pressure sores and incorrect posture, and further promote independence of persons with disabilities.

Sponsorships

The Association recognises that it cannot work in isolation, and that private welfare organisations can no longer operate on funding kindly donated to them by well-meaning members of the public. We have therefore embraced the concept of working together with corporate companies in the prevention of disablement, and the education of the public around disability issues.

We encourage corporate companies to partner with us by investing large amounts of time and effort into the social upliftment of the community. This in turn is a tremendous advantage to the company, especially on a legislative level where they are required to meet certain social responsibility targets.

Private welfare has become a business and should be marketed as such. The Association assists corporates by, amongst others -

  • providing sensitisation workshops in order to educate their personnel on disability issues;
  • Interpreting Government legislation;
  • Conducting accessibility assessments.
Sensitivity to issues pertaining to disability would contribute greatly towards tolerance of diversity amongst employees, resulting in changing attitudes towards persons with disabilities. Once attitudinal barriers have been broken down, persons with disabilities will be allowed to take their place in society with dignity.
