The Association serves as a pro-active forum for the advancement of persons with physical disabilities so as to enable them to attain their maximum level of independence and integration into the community, and is active in the prevention of physical disablement.
Awareness
The Association and its Branches undertakes ongoing promotion and awareness projects, in conjunction with the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa’s Manager for Promotion and Awareness, Mr Fanie Du Toit, in an effort to improve the visibility of persons with disabilities amongst the South African community.
The key objectives of this initiative are -
To develop an open, informed society which allows a two-way communication between persons with disabilities and non-disabled persons.
To develop a knowledge base regarding information to allow informed decision making to the benefit of persons with disabilities and their families.
To empower persons with disabilities with knowledge in order for them to be able to represent themselves regarding awareness, accessibility and employment.
The various tools used in achieving these aims include exhibitions and talks, displays, and use of radio interviews and newspaper articles. We have recently begun using puppet shows to create disability awareness amongst small children, as well as to teach life skills to children in our Special Care Centres.
Persons with disabilities are empowered through training workshops and accredited training courses to represent themselves in public, and participate fully in the marketing process. This guarantees them a renewed sense of purpose and value, which can be used to maximum effect in our awareness raising initiatives.
Sensitisation workshops are an effective way of educating the public concerning disability, and of the correct manner in which to communicate and interact with persons with disabilities, and are becoming increasingly popular. It also affords them the chance of interacting with persons with various disabilities, and creates awareness of all aspects of disability. Following from these workshops, we are eager to visit corporate businesses and assist them with the implementation of relevant legislation pertaining to persons with disabilities, for example the Employment Equity Act, the SABS building regulations for accessibility of buildings to disabled persons, and the Code of Good Practice for the Employment of Persons with Disabilities.
Branches attend training workshops, to ensure that those persons responsible for awareness at Branch level, have the necessary skills and information to perform their duties. In this way the Association liaises directly with Branches and provides valuable advice and assistance.
